Come and enjoy the power and beauty of nature, while quieting the noisy mind, finding your center, and rediscovering our True Nature.  The study of Kosho Shorei Ryu has been able to offer students authentic training based on the Principles of Natural Law, and access to authentic wisdom for nearly 800 years by training in the mountains, forests and rivers, where we find the insights and inspirations that nature best provides.

If you are a martial artist, a natural healer, or a seeker of Truth and inner peace, this retreat is for you!  It will deepen your understanding of True Nature, and yield deeper insight into yourself.  We will slow down, leaving space and time for retreat within the heart-mind.  We will hike through the mountains, near beautiful streams and waterfalls, among strong New England-weathered trees, glacial boulders, and breathtaking vistas.  You will experience your relationship to these things through Kosho Shorei Ryu’s teachings, which are informed by ancient Taoist and Buddhist philosophy.  The Kosho Shorei Ryu Warrior-Sage-Healer tradition offers ancient exercises, many best experienced in the mountain forests, that are designed to help us understand our nature, maximize health, vitality, and longevity, and teach us what our lineage’s master teachers called True Self-Defense.  Lessons may include walking meditation, energy cultivation and health-building exercises, Sei-kempo traditional martial arts, philosophies of natural health, and Japanese yoga exercises for improved health and vitality.  You will come away from this experience with new insights, deeper understanding, and a renewed sense of natural ease, warrior spirit, and vitality.

Everyone should have a good pair of hiking boots, a map of White Mountain National Forest (I'd recommend the one from AMC), a compass, a whistle, a good flashlight or headlamp, waterproof matches or a lighter, a knife, and a jo or walking stick, as well as food and water. A mini first-aid kit (complete with Yunnan Paiyao), and a nylon rain-wicking jacket are also essential. We're going rain or shine.

It'd also be a good idea to bring bug-repellant. I'd recommend herbal versions without DEET or other nasty chemicals, they are usually just as effective, and available at the Natural Food Store, on Main Street in Niantic.

This is a serious forest. But, we've done this many times before, and the senior students and I are going to do our best to make sure everyone stays safe. So, there is little chance a person will get hurt or lost, but we always prepare for the possibility. Kosho is a preparatory art!  It is only appropriate to prepare well, so as not to become a burden or compromise the experience for others through lack of having what you need.

There is a lot of interest in the retreat this year, and I won't be surprised if we have as many as thirty participants! I have been inspired many times lately about great Kosho Shorei lessons I'll be teaching this year! It's should be an unforgettable and inspirational experience for all attending, with a few surprizes!

Please make sure you sign up for the retreat at/through the Dojo as early as possible before the deadline, to save money, and because it helps me to plan the trip well if I have a solid idea of who and how many people are joining us. And, make sure you coordinate with each other for room-sharing early too, so no one gets left out, and so you can all make your reservations early enough to get into a condo.

Thank you.

Osu!
